Doser or no doser for SoHo environments?
For the private and small office usage, we recommend to use our doserless Grinta, built by Nuova Simonelli.
Grinders with a doser bin need a certain amount of espresso ground in the doser bin to cover the dosing lever at the bottom with sufficient espresso ground which is about 6 ounces espresso ground at the minimum. If there is not enough espresso ground in the doser bin and the dosing lever runs low, the actual dose pulled out does not reflect the adjusted and required amount of espresso ground for the porta filter: The espresso transforms into an Americano.
Now let us make the math: Three espresso ground doses (between 7 to 10 grams per dose) equal one ounce; to get fresh espresso ground out of the doser bin, you need to turn each day at the minimum about 20 espresso ground doses.
Speaking from our experience, for less than 30 espresso ground doses per day, the right tool for you is the doserless Grinta grinder. The only disadvantage of those doserless SoHo semi-professional grinders is that you need to find your own way to adjust the right amount of espresso ground for your espresso extraction. Grinta produces about 1 gram of espresso ground per second ; approximately after 7 to 8 seconds grinding you should have the right amount for your dose. However, from the practical stand point spoken, after 10-12 shots grinding into the coffee measure which is part of our Grinta Grinder, you are set to produce a nice crema on top of your espresso. After 50-60 doses and extractions you are probably ready to grind directly into your portafilter.
